Does it affect me?

If you employ people, or indeed are an employee, then the answer is almost certainly ‘yes’. Our experience suggests that employers will need up to 12 months to prepare properly as your duties as an employer go far beyond simply arranging a pension. Are you ready?

What do I need to do?

In brief, register with the Pensions Regulator; assess any existing schemes to ensure they meet qualifying rules; segment your employees into eligible, non eligible and entitled workers; communicate with employees; engage all stakeholders, including payroll, HR, finance and pension providers; arrange a qualifying workplace pension scheme if appropriate – having done due diligence on a pension provider or providers; handle opt ins and opt outs; re enrol workers who opted out, when appropriate. Not forgetting, keep records of all this for six years.

When do I need to comply for?

Companies have staging dates according to their employee numbers and PAYE reference. You can find your staging date here.

What happens if I don’t comply?

Our meetings with the DWP, the Pensions Regulator and the Minister for Pensions have left us in no doubt that they are serious about making auto enrolment work. Not complying when due will result in fines – for more detail, click here. Furthermore, encouraging employees to opt out or incentivising opt outs is potentially a criminal offence.
